Assessment
Using rubrics for various assignments is a helpful way to organize assessment for students so that they understand what areas they are excelling in and what areas they need to improve upon in future assignments. For the freshman composition course, students will be assessed on discussion posts, response papers, and essays. Rubrics will be used in two ways: 1) to guide students as they complete their assignments and 2) to be filled out by me each time a student receives a grade. The following is an activity and assessment rubric. The objectives for this activity are as follows:
Objectives:
1. Students should be able to define, explain, and apply the concept of the bystander effect, focusing on silence versus speaking up.
2. After reading about scholarly research, students should be able to conduct research and select an appropriate essay/article to share with the class.

Response Paper
This activity appears toward the end of a module in which students have read about and discussed the bystander effect. The response paper is a way to have them apply what they have learned to research they will collect.
This week's discussion revolves a lot around the idea of staying quiet versus speaking up. I would like you to write a one-page response paper this week that will help you to prepare for your next essay. Find an article/essay from the library (using the online databases) that illustrates silence/bystander effect. I am leaving this topic fairly open so that you can really run with it and make it your own. If you find yourself struggling, remember to ask questions of your fellow students and myself on the Q&A Discussion Forum.
I’ll also be asking you to share an MLA citation and brief summary of the article with the rest of the class (Post to the “Sharing Articles” Discussion Board.) Just imagine how much research is being shared through this activity!
Refer to the Response Paper rubric when working on this assignment. Below is the rubric that students would receive prior to completing the assignment; I would also return their grades to them with this rubric filled out.
